the new Child Abuse album tentatively entitled "Folk Music" was recorded by Ben Greenberg of Z's and Pygmy Shrews at his studio in the basement of St.Celicia's Catholic school in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The result are 6 epic songs that's a result of playing together for a good four years now. It's definitely more song based than previous material, and perhaps even more menacing. The artwork by Tony Garifalakis fits the music perfectly and we're really excited to show his work in a CD/LP format. Release date is set for late winter on Lovepump Records! Also stay tuned for a prospective 'acoustic' Child Abuse EP out sometime early next year.

oh man oh man oh. I'm really sorry for this. really i am. well. lets see. its been more than a year since the last Child Abuse blog post. and really....there is NO excuse for this nonsense. How about a quick update from the last post till now. how does that sound? I'll be quick.

1. Our tour last year was 'fun'. We broke down probably about 7 times. If not, more.

2. We've played plenty of shows with some pretty fantastic bands. We finally played with labelmates Aids Wolf and that was extremely interesting!

3. Oran (child abuse drummer) is at the end of his foray into memoir writing, and he will be finishing up his book for Harper Collins in (:checks watch:)...maybe a week? Then it gets sent off to printing press in Feb. sometime? Let's hope for the best.

4. Our great friend George Chen came through and released a split 7" with one of our favorite bands Z's on his fantastic label Zum Media. This release has artwork by John Dwyer.

5. Tim (child abuse bassist) is still gigging on the regs with his group The Hub along with drummer phenom. Sean Noonan and recent addition- Darius Jones from Little Women. Heres a video of Tim doing an improv. set with Mick Barr and Kevin Shea from this past August. Righteous.

(side note: Impose Magazine wrote this great article on jazz-bo's in brooklyn and child abuse is mentioned. Check it out here.)

6. Luke (child abuse keys and vox) also has another group thats been gigging around recently called 'HICCUP.' It is an electronic duo with Chuck Bettis of Brown Wing Overdrive fame. Luke also has been producing tracks for his solo project WARSHIP GOD that should have a cd release in the next couple months.

7. The boxset on ROCK IS HELL out of austria is out.

8. We've met an extraordinary Australian gentleman named Tony Garifalakis who is an extraordinary artist operating out of Melbourne. There is a planned collab. in the works. Check out Tony's work here.

Here are some videos I drudged up on YouTube of some off-kilter popular Russian music. Most of what i found was god-awful, not to mention I can't read russian. I decided to mainly focus on what was going on musically during the collapse of the iron curtain. Luckily, I found some pretty interesting things :

Heres a video from a band "Ночной Проспект" loosely translated to "Night Prospect". Weird industrial jazz/rock from 1991. kinda reminds me of "the Problemist," a later Sordide Sentimentale group but MUCH better.

Another one from Ночной Проспект(Night Prospect). Im trying to figure out what the synth player is playing on exactly. The same style is still there, although its way more proggier than the later years. From 1988 :

This is a video from the Russian answer to Ween, "NOM ( standing for: Neformal'noe Ob'edinenie Molodezhi; God knows what that means.) for their song "Nina". NOM is apparently very popular in Russia, quickly becoming one of the most 'out' Russian popular groups. It blows my mind that this video is from 1992, a weird amagalmation of the Residents, Men's Recovery Project, Tuxedo Moon and so much more. :

This is a video of Russian metal band "Чёрный Обелиск", translated to 'Black Obelisk', one of the longest running metal bands in Russia. This video is from 1987, early on in the nascent stages of the group. Starting off with the rad skull/candles mini-altar into totally rawwww musical viciousness ala Sabbath, Megadeth etal. Primal, full of energy, but also amateur, lo-fi and fully Russian. The crowd is worth this video alone.

youtube has allowed me to glimpse some classic blistering hardcore as it was meant to be- on shitty video and blown out sound. below is the legendary GAUZE in action. being one of my favorite hardcore groups, GAUZE has crept its way into CHILD ABUSE's top influences. Complete energy, thats all i got to say.

SIEGE, in a classic video apparently from either a rehearsal or their high school battle of the bands. i reccommend this video not only for the musical merit, but for an artistic one as well. It could well be some sort of video piece in an avant performance exhibition. Completely weird and scary.

wow! Amazing footage of RAW POWER in an unspecified year, probably 86 at the latest . RAW POWER were the darlings of italian thrash. i believe this song 'politicans' is from the 'screams from the gutter' LP? extreme hc/thrash italian style! check out the red pants and the ripping leads!

HERESY, one of the greatest UK hc/thrash acts. Hugely influential. Id have to say though the recordings arent as good as what you'll witness below. energy energy energy.

recent viewing, " the rake's progress" by igor stravinsky, i was instantly blown away. based on a series of paintings and engravings by William Hogarth, it is an essentially a tale of morality, a vision of the dangers of the devil on idle minds. the music, is, of course completely off the wall. the vocals go against the grain of the score, sometime culminating in four part ridculously complex harmonies. the role of 'Baba the Turk'(above), the transvestite wife of protaginst Tom Rakewell is both musically confounding and delightful. if you can get past the 'opera' thing, and just concentrate on the way the voice intertwines( and outertwines) with the music, i wholeheartdly reccommend this to you.

when i first scored my first taste of CHILD ABUSE not only my arms and
those of my friends, but nearly everything i could see (from my chair)
stood on end. the world suddenly seemed to me like one of those
magnetic faces where you drag metal shavings over a jolly face through
plastic to create illusions of facial hair. cars, storefronts and
even the road itself began to shiver mechanicly where they had once
stood solid and still. it was then that i saw it and noticed it
because everything else around it was moving and it wasnt. i dont
think anyone else could see it. they were busy getting to work and
stuff. but i just stood there watching the world around it cascade.
that was the way to see it, by not looking at it. i knew i would have
to get right home and tell you about it. when i got home i sat myself
down quickly in front of my communicator, drew up your address and
started typing:

dear morst,
im writing you to confirm our appointment of later today, to make it
solid. hourly ill be checking in here. my screen is saying that your
not at your desk but its hard to say. are you banging your
girlfriend? apparently CHILD ABUSE has landed here or very near here.
i know you find this sort of thing interesting and that even
sometimes this has brought trouble for you. but i figured you would
at least like to know. we could just go and get a drink or something.
what is your schedule like? i have a pretty open week except i need
to be at the foot of the mine at some point this afternoon to pick up
some stray remainders as well as those sweet slacks that literally
dominated conversation all last week. part of me feels that when i
slip into those stripes a lot of things will change for me and ill be
able to greet people without all the usaul examination, aka the once
over. but again, i could be whitling away a jawbone still functional
and wrappped in flesh. ive been known to over do it or to rush it at
times so we will just have to see. also, have have you heard about my
plans to stack and, in other non-vertical ways, organize water? seems
impossible but thats what they said about the back wall of my house
and we all know how that panned out. it was a literal and figuritive
sweepstakes. who could forget the wave of money that followed that
idea down the the pike? only a fool. a fool wIth money. speaking of
the wall, ive noticed that occaisionally, on a sunny afternoon,
various creatures from the yard will make their way to the window,
along the base of it, and seemingly 'sun' themselves there till the
reflections across them have spilled away with the sunlight. its
something to see when a squirl or sparrow will be half asleep with an
interview of a television actress spilling over its back as it begins
to gather itself for the walk back into the forest. sometimes i get
the feeling that im back in school in some classroom that smells like
chalk and vomit watching some filmstrip about how to prepare for the
next year with its drivers ed classes, intermural sports, assemblys
and the countless hallways we would all have to negotiate alone, or at
least psychicly alone. i went to one of the biggest high schools in
the area. i wouldnt call the experience traumatic but i defineltly
would not go back given a choice to travel. i hope this finds you

german/swiss/spanish artist ALBERT OEHLEN (TITAN KATZEN, RED CRAYOLA, JAILHOUSE etc.) has committed one of his newest paintings to the upcoming CHILD ABUSE full length cd to be put out by the fine lads over at LOVEPUMP. Albert's paintings are straight from his heart, and his music is absolutely bizarre (examples: check out jailhouse or titan katzen on the Meuw Records imprint). For those not in the know, Albert is one heck of a fella', renaissance man complete with a love of all things mollusk and motunk. He currently resides in Switzerland with his wife and three children. We are VERY excited about this.

the kind gentlemen of LOVEPUMP UNITED(home to AIDS WOLF, GLITTER PALS) will be releasing a split cd from two powerhouses of the nyc underground- MIRACLE OF BIRTH and CHILD ABUSE. Miracle of Birth is one man, comprised of a young rascal by the name of Jade Larson who has previously played in santa cruz's SPACEBOY and currently VILLIANS. MIRACLE OF BIRTH is an impressive amagalmation of classy progressive sequencer rhythms with Jade's spectacular drumming all over it. Imagine a perfect mix of 70's horrorscapes and rhythmic jimble-jamble ala MAGMA or UNIVERS ZERO. CHILD ABUSE is headed in the studio with Colin Marston at the PAINCAVE to record their side. We played first, and had an amazing time, Jolt-Cola type energy shit, good crowd, and dancers! LAKE headed on with the screech minimalist bombast ala t. iommi's dark times, flailing limbs kicked some heavy percussion then! c. and c. of VIzUSA/excepter pounced on the stage unleasing some primal fury. Aa, with Hank of STAY F'CKED on drums were amazing, a true original and Z's really pounded out their thang, done with more precision and focus then before. something is DRIVING this band!

NEWS:

GENGHIS TRON and CHILD ABUSE are welcoming in the new bastard child of the year with a quick jaunt down the coast then back up. GENGHIS TRON are quickly becoming the sound of youth everywhere who enjoy blistering heavy .034 fluttering in between RZA-esque beat cakes. please check them out. we plan on participating with them in some mind-sculpting/trepanation together and we hope this tour with be a success. here are the dates:

so i couldnt find any pictures of soldiers playing guitar or rocking out, but i did find this nice photo of THE MONKS which i think is a bit appropiate.

we played first to a good sized crowd, i fell off the stage and hurt my knee, o.c. didnt really feel it but we felt like we were pretty tight, here are the others

made out of babies- this NYC band on neurot lay down some classic NYC muscle noise dive shit in the vein of jesus lizard, unsane, pachinko and the rest of the am. rep roster. (with a dash of early neurosis, of course!). i can even hear nyhc legends DIE 116 in the bass lines a bit and the stage presence of Julie Christmas was more then welcome. good job from these guys who lay under the wire a bit here in nyc.

400 blows- L.A. band whos more honest then anyone out there. stripped down groove and "harshing the mellow" vibe from these guys, complete with matching uniforms and sunglasses. i would say a definite david yow influence on these guys. they made the crowd bob their heads up and down up and down and up.

soldiers of fortune- these guys are having a good ole' time jammin on the CCR tip. seemed like they were having a ball up there and rightly they should. repetitive, jammy rock n roll from guys that just wanna have a good time.

quick show review-mouthus/z's/zaimph/m.morgan

4000 square foot loft in dumbo, with sweeping views of the manhattan bridge and the city. probably the prettiest place we've ever played. unfortunately, i missed necking and more teeth. here we go.

Z's- got there late, but caught the last main part of Z's. their new shit is out of this world, very quiet, almost an exotica feel to some of the songs, giving it a cartoon like intensity. defintely the best band in nyc these days. these guys are light years ahead of what anyone else is doing.

zaimph-members of majick markers and double leopards threw down some hyper bore drone shit with crap drums that did not hold my interest. underpracticed and way more LINE 6 and e-bow then i need.

m.morgan- a quick set from morgan, i would say a mixture of glass sucking guitar noise and a sort of sweet side, like if storm bugs wrote some tortured pop vocals underneath guitar sonic schlock (in a good way). morgan utilised the reverb drenched arena quite nicely.

mouthus- first time seeing these guys and after hearing a lot of praise, i was interested in seeing them. at first listen(about 15 min. into the set) i thought they were just jammin' on the dead c/loud improv tip, with the usual guitar center vocal oddities, but then all of a sudden it all came together and started sounding like a neanderthal prison party while Tanzania's Witchcraft drums played by keith moon hammered relentlessly in and out of the guitar. the drummer had these 'electronic pads' during the set, which i thought he didnt even need, but the musical dervish twirl towards the end of the set made it for me.

as for CHILD ABUSE, youre going to have to look somewhere else for a review.
